Asthma & Wheeze

Accurate diagnosis, the right treatment at the right step, and a written plan that keeps your child active and in school.

When to Seek a Specialist

Is Your Child's Asthma Under Control?

Asthma is an inflammatory condition of the airways, commonly triggered by viral infections, dust mites, pollen, pet dander, exercise, cold air and stress. A specialist review is worthwhile when your child has:

  • Two or more flare-ups needing oral steroids in 12 months
  • Symptoms more than twice a week
  • Reliever inhaler use more than twice a week
  • An A&E attendance for breathing difficulty
  • School absence or growth concerns linked to symptoms

Objective testing, not guesswork.
Diagnosis is supported by FeNO (airway inflammation), spirometry with reversibility from age five, peak flow monitoring, allergy testing (skin prick or blood) and chest X-ray for atypical cases.
Every phenotype matters.
Allergic asthma, exercise-induced symptoms, viral-induced wheeze in younger children, and severe or refractory asthma (including biologic therapies) are each managed differently.
Management Plan

What Good Asthma Care Looks Like

Stepwise Medication

Inhaled corticosteroids and reliever therapy adjusted step by step to the lowest dose that keeps symptoms controlled.

Written Asthma Action Plan

A personalised plan for home and school covering daily treatment, worsening symptoms and emergencies.

Inhaler Technique Training

Hands-on coaching with spacers and masks — because technique determines whether medicine actually reaches the lungs.

Trigger Reduction & Review

Practical advice for reducing triggers at home, with reviews every 1–3 months for moderate to severe asthma.

Common Questions

Asthma Questions

Will my child outgrow asthma?

Many children do improve significantly, particularly those with viral-induced wheeze in the early years. Others carry asthma into adulthood — regular review ensures treatment always matches current symptoms.

Are inhaled steroids safe for children?

At standard doses, inhaled corticosteroids are safe and remain the most effective preventive treatment. Dr Jain always uses the lowest dose that maintains control, with growth monitored at reviews.

When is asthma an emergency?

Seek urgent help if your child needs their reliever more than every four hours, can't speak in full sentences, or is working hard to breathe. Your written action plan spells out exactly what to do.
