Chest Pain in Children

The reassuring truth: most chest pain in children does not come from the heart. Expert evaluation tells you for certain.

When to Seek Evaluation

Red Flags Worth Checking

Chest pain worries parents more than almost any other symptom — yet in children it is usually musculoskeletal or digestive in origin. A cardiac evaluation is sensible when pain:

  • Occurs during exercise or exertion
  • Radiates to the arm, back or jaw
  • Wakes your child from sleep
  • Comes with dizziness, fainting or sweating
  • Runs alongside a family history of heart disease
  • Is accompanied by breathing difficulty

Causes we distinguish.
Musculoskeletal (costochondritis, muscle strain, rib injury), digestive (reflux, oesophagitis, trapped wind), respiratory (asthma, pleurisy, pneumothorax), psychological (anxiety, panic) — and the rare cardiac causes: myocarditis, pericarditis, arrhythmias and congenital coronary anomalies.
The echo is easy.
An echocardiogram is completely painless and takes 20–30 minutes — most children find it no harder than a pregnancy-style scan.
Diagnostic Pathway

A Thorough, Stepwise Evaluation

  1. Detailed history & examination

The character, timing and triggers of the pain usually reveal its source.

  2. 12-lead ECG

A quick, painless screen of the heart's electrical activity.

  3. Echocardiogram

Direct visualisation of heart structure and function where indicated.

  4. Targeted further tests

Blood tests (troponin, inflammatory markers), chest X-ray and lung function testing — only when genuinely needed.

  5. Clear management plan

Tailored treatment of the actual cause, education on symptoms to watch, and follow-up or multidisciplinary care where appropriate.

Common Questions

Chest Pain Questions

Is chest pain in children usually serious?

No — heart problems are an uncommon cause of chest pain in children. Most cases are musculoskeletal, digestive or respiratory. The purpose of evaluation is to confirm that reassuring picture with certainty.

What does an echocardiogram feel like?

It's completely painless. Gel is applied to the chest and a small probe takes ultrasound pictures of the heart — the whole scan takes about 20–30 minutes with a parent beside your child throughout.

Can my child keep playing sport during the evaluation?

If the pain occurs with exercise, it's sensible to pause strenuous sport until the assessment is complete. For most other patterns, normal activity can continue — Dr Jain will advise you specifically at the consultation.
